“That’s why Dad wanted the wedding stopped.”
I stared at her.
“He knew?”
“He discovered it six weeks before the wedding.”
“Then why didn’t he tell me?”
“Because telling you meant admitting Mom had lied to him for decades.”
“So you drugged Adrian?”
“I was supposed to create a scandal.”
She wiped her face.
“Dad wanted you to hate Adrian enough to leave him.”
“You could have told me!”
“I tried!”
“When?”
“Your engagement party. Lake Como. I asked whether anything could make you cancel the wedding.”
I remembered.
I’d laughed.
I’d said only Adrian himself could make me stop loving him.
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“So Dad designed something you couldn’t forgive.”
Adrian whispered, “You assaulted me.”
Vanessa flinched.
“I didn’t sleep with you.”
“You drugged me.”
“Yes.”
“You kissed me while I was drugged.”
“Yes.”
“You made Amelia believe—”
“Because she couldn’t marry you!”
Her scream echoed through the ballroom.
“She was your sister!”
Guests stood frozen.
I wanted the floor to open beneath me.
Then Eli tugged my hand.
“Mom?”
I dropped to my knees.
Both boys looked frightened.
I pulled them against me.
Whatever horror existed in our past, they were innocent.
My children were not shame.
They were not mistakes.
They were my sons.
Then Margaret spoke again.
“There’s more.”
I almost laughed.
How could there possibly be more?
She looked at Vanessa.
“Tell her.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
“No.”
“Tell her.”
“Shut up.”
“Vanessa.”
“I SAID SHUT UP!”
And suddenly I understood.
Margaret wasn’t looking at me anymore.
She was looking at Vanessa with disgust.
“The DNA report is real,” Margaret said.
“But the names aren’t.”
Silence.
I stood.
“What?”
Margaret reached into her handbag and removed another envelope.
“This is the original.”
Adrian opened it.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then lifted toward Vanessa.
“Oh my God.”
I grabbed it.
Two names.
Vanessa Hart.
Adrian Blackwood.
Probability consistent with half-siblings: 99.87%.
I stared at Vanessa.
She backed away.
“No.”
Margaret’s voice remained calm.
“Charles Hart did discover an affair.”
She looked at me.
“But it wasn’t Amelia who was Richard’s daughter.”
My eyes found Vanessa.
Vanessa was.
Adrian covered his mouth.
Margaret continued.
“Charles learned that Vanessa was Richard Blackwood’s biological child.”
Vanessa shook her head violently.
“That’s not true.”
“You’ve known for five years.”
“No!”
“Your father confronted you.”
“Stop.”
“He told you that Adrian was your half-brother.”
“STOP!”
“And you realized something.”
Margaret looked at me.
“If Amelia married Adrian, she would become part of the Blackwood family legally.”
Then she looked at Vanessa.
“But Vanessa believed she belonged there by blood.”
Vanessa screamed.
“IT WAS MY FAMILY!”
The ballroom erupted in whispers.
And suddenly every piece shifted.
The sedative.
The staged kiss.
