Marianne suddenly covered her mouth.
She knew.
Daniel looked at Noah.
“Then Blackwood belongs to the trust.”
The ballroom fell silent.
I stared at the chandeliers.
The marble.
The gardens.
The gold-rimmed glasses.
The enormous flower arrangements.
The place Julian had chosen to demonstrate how far above us he had risen.
The palace where he had publicly called his former wife and child garbage.
Daniel looked directly at him.
**“You held your wedding in your son’s house.”**
Nobody laughed this time.
Julian sagged against the guards.
I thought that was the end.
It wasn’t.
Because Noah spoke.
“There’s one more recording.”
Julian raised his head.
This time he looked genuinely terrified.
“Noah.”
My son studied him.
“What is it?” I asked.
He hesitated.
“I didn’t listen to all of it.”
“Why?”
“Because Grandpa says your name at the beginning.”
My heart stopped.
He opened the final file.
**FOR_CLAIRE_ONLY.mp4**
A video appeared.
Robert Cross sat behind his desk.
The timestamp showed that it had been recorded four days before his death.
He looked thinner than I remembered.
But his eyes were clear.
“Claire.”
My knees nearly failed.
“If you are watching this, I’m sorry.”
I covered my mouth.
“I should have called you sooner. I should have believed what I was seeing sooner.”
He looked away.
“Most parents spend their lives finding excuses for their children.”
Marianne began sobbing.
“I was no different.”
Robert took a breath.
“I knew Julian lied. I knew he was selfish. I knew he cheated.”
Victoria looked down.
“But theft was different.”
He leaned toward the camera.
“And what he did after I confronted him was worse.”
Julian suddenly shouted.
“NO!”
The ballroom doors opened.
Two uniformed officers entered.
Behind them were three people wearing dark suits.
Daniel exhaled.
“I called the district attorney’s financial crimes unit twenty minutes ago.”
Julian fought harder.
“You had no authority!”
Daniel looked at him.
“As managing partner, I have every authority to report suspected theft from client accounts.”
The officers approached.
But Robert’s voice continued.
“Three days ago, Julian came to my house.”
My entire body went cold.
“He demanded that I destroy the records.”
Marianne stared at her son.
Julian shook his head violently.
“Dad was confused.”
Robert continued.
“I refused.”
“HE WAS CONFUSED!”
One of the officers restrained Julian.
Robert’s face filled the screen.
“He told me I was old.”
Marianne whispered, “Stop.”
“He told me people die at my age.”
A terrible stillness filled the room.
I heard Victoria inhale sharply.
Robert said:
**“And then he removed my medication from the kitchen cabinet.”**
Marianne screamed.
“No!”
Julian’s knees buckled.
One officer immediately reached for his wrists.
Robert continued.
“I recovered it later from his car. He claimed he had taken it accidentally.”
Marianne crossed the ballroom.
“You told me he misplaced it!”
Julian shouted, “I DIDN’T KILL HIM!”
The room exploded.
People shouted.
Phones rose higher.
An officer snapped handcuffs onto Julian’s wrist.
He screamed again.
“My father died of heart failure!”
