Daniel had gone back.
There had been a little girl beneath a collapsed beam.
He had pulled her through the smoke.
She had burned her wrist grabbing a metal latch.
He remembered her screaming one name.
Papa.
Daniel looked at Emily.
“I pulled you out.”
Her face went white.
“What are you talking about?”
“Your father’s fire.”
Emily backed away.
“No.”
“My father took me there.”
“Why?”
Daniel picked up the deed again.
Because Samuel Mercer and Thomas Hale had been partners.
And someone had spent nearly twenty years making certain nobody knew.

There was more hidden inside the frame.
A second piece of paper.
A map.
Mercer Ranch was divided by an old boundary line.
Half the western ridge legally belonged not to Daniel—
but to Thomas Hale’s surviving heir.
Emily.
She stared at the paper.
“That can’t be true.”
Daniel understood everything at once.
The railway needed both owners.
Daniel had refused.
Emily did not even know she owned anything.
Whoever wanted Mercer Gap had created the perfect solution.
Bring Emily back.
Make Daniel fall in love with her.
Have them marry.
Kill Daniel.
Emily would inherit Daniel’s land while already owning the Hale portion.
For one brief moment, every acre would belong to a single frightened widow.
A widow already being blackmailed.
A widow who could be forced to sign.
And afterward?
Daniel remembered the bullet.
“They weren’t going to let you live long enough to enjoy it.”
Emily whispered, “Clara.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Yes.”
A floorboard creaked outside.
Daniel reached for his revolver.
Too late.
The front door opened.
Clara Whitmore stood there holding a pistol.
Behind her stood Sheriff Bell.
Emily gasped.
Daniel slowly raised his hands.
Clara smiled sadly.
“I hoped you wouldn’t find Samuel’s papers.”
Daniel looked at the sheriff.
“You’re with her?”
Bell’s expression twisted.
“For twenty thousand dollars, I’m with anybody.”
Clara entered.
“You always were stubborn, Daniel.
Just like your father.”
“You sent the letters.”
“Yes.”
“You chose Emily.”
Clara smiled.
“No.”
Daniel frowned.
“What?”
“I merely continued what had already begun.”
Emily stared at her.
Clara reached into her bag and removed an old packet of correspondence.
“The first letter was not mine.”
Daniel felt the room tilt.
Clara looked toward Emily.
“Samuel sent it.”
Emily shook her head.
“No.”
“He found you two years before he died.
He wanted Thomas Hale’s daughter returned to the valley.”
Daniel’s anger sharpened.
“Why?”
Clara smiled.
“You’ll have to ask a dead man.”
She raised the gun.
“But you won’t have the opportunity.”
Sheriff Bell stepped toward Daniel.
“Hands behind your back.”
Daniel obeyed.
Clara placed papers on the table.
