Millions.
Enough to destroy everything Dad had built.
He feared that if he confronted her without airtight evidence, she would disappear.
Then he died.
Before he could finish.
But he had prepared for that possibility.
The final page contained instructions.
Names.
Account numbers.
A lawyer.
And one sentence underlined twice.
Trust neither Eleanor nor anyone she brings into Claire’s life after my death.
I read it twice.
Then three times.
Adrian’s hand slowly slipped away from my shoulder.
Nobody spoke.
I looked at him.
He had turned pale.
“Adrian?”
He stood.
Vanessa looked between us.
“What?”
Adrian walked toward the window.
My heartbeat changed.
“Adrian.”
He said nothing.

I rose.
“What does that mean?”
He closed his eyes.
And suddenly every terrible thing that had happened at my wedding seemed insignificant.
Because Adrian whispered:
“Your mother introduced us.”
I stopped.
He was right.
Four years earlier, at a charity auction.
Mother had walked me across the room.
Claire, this is Adrian Vale.
Adrian had smiled.
We had talked for three hours.
Our relationship began that night.
I had forgotten the detail because it seemed meaningless.
Now it felt like a gunshot.
Vanessa stood.
“You work in private equity.”
Adrian turned.
“Yes.”
“You had access to Claire’s financial records?”
“Some.”
My voice barely worked.
“Why did she introduce us?”
He looked shattered.
“I didn’t know who you were at first.”
My stomach dropped.
“At first?”
Vanessa moved between us.
“What does that mean?”
Adrian looked at me.
And said the last thing I expected.
“Your father hired me.”
I laughed.
Once.
“No.”
“Claire—”
“My father was dead when we met.”
“Yes.”
“Then how did he hire you?”
Adrian reached into his wallet.
He removed an old business card.
Richard Monroe.
On the back was handwriting I recognized instantly.
My father’s.
It said:
A.V.—if anything happens to me, find Claire before Eleanor realizes what I left behind.
Protect her.
Tell her only when she discovers the truth herself.
I couldn’t breathe.
“You knew?”
“Not everything.”
“How much?”
“I knew your father believed someone was stealing from the company.
I knew he was afraid the danger might eventually reach you.”
“You married me because my father paid you?”
“No.”
The answer came instantly.
“I met you because your father asked me to find you if he died.”
“That’s the same thing.”
“No.”
His eyes filled.
“I was supposed to watch from a distance.”
Vanessa stared at him.
“Then why date her?”
Adrian looked at me.
“Because I fell in love with her.”
I wanted to believe him.
Which made it worse.
“How convenient.”
“Claire—”
“How much did he pay you?”
“Nothing.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“He saved my life.”
Silence.
Adrian sat down.
“When I was twenty-three, I worked for a fund that almost collapsed because of fraudulent investments.
I was young and stupid.
Everyone blamed me.
Your father found evidence proving I wasn’t responsible.”
He looked at Dad’s notebook.
“He destroyed the evidence that would have ruined my career and gave me a second chance.”
