My mother coughed, lifted a glass of water, and continued.
“She also told me Preston had begun pursuing her.”
Several guests turned toward him.
“I asked Shelby to help me document the fraud.”
I felt the story changing again.
“She agreed.”
Shelby whispered, “Stop.”
My mother looked exhausted on the screen.
“For two months, Shelby gave Elias information.”
I turned to him.
He nodded.
“She could have helped save the company.”
My mother’s voice became quieter.
“But then Preston made her a different offer.”
Preston stared at Shelby.
“What did you tell her?”
Shelby snapped, “Shut up.”
“Shelby.”
“Shut up!”
My mother’s recorded voice cut through both of them.
“He told Shelby that if she joined him, he could help her take what she believed should have been hers from birth.”
Silence.
“He told her that Vivienne had inherited the life Shelby deserved.”
My chest tightened.
“He told her blood entitled her to half.”
The screen changed.
Messages appeared.
PRESTON: She has everything because Evelyn chose her.
SHELBY: Vivienne didn’t choose any of this.
PRESTON: Neither did you.
Another message.
PRESTON: I can make it right.
Another.
PRESTON: Once Evelyn is gone, we stop asking permission.
I looked at Preston.
He had seen the wound inside Shelby and put his fingers directly into it.
But then another message appeared.
From Shelby.
SHELBY: And what happens to Vivienne?
Preston:
She survives. She always does.
Shelby:
That’s not an answer.
Preston:
It’s the only one that matters.
My mother returned onscreen.
“I do not know what Shelby will choose.”
Her eyes glistened.
“I hope she chooses you.”
Shelby broke.
She covered her face and sobbed.
“I hope she chooses the sister who loved her before she knew she was her sister.”
I had to grip the railing beside the stage.
“But if you are watching this video, I fear that she did not.”
My mother’s voice softened.
“Vivienne, listen to me carefully.”
I looked at her image like a child waiting to be told everything would somehow be all right.
“Do not let their betrayal make you cruel.”
My eyes closed.
“Do not confuse revenge with strength.”
A tear slid down my cheek.
“Strength is deciding what they are allowed to take from you next.”
The video faded.
The ballroom remained silent.
Nobody applauded.
Nobody whispered.
Even scandal had become too small for what had just happened.
Shelby stood in the center of the room, surrounded by flowers, candles, champagne and people who now knew that the bride had spent eighteen years secretly living beside the family that had unknowingly lost her.
I no longer knew what emotion belonged where.
I hated her.
I pitied her.
I remembered her holding my hair when I was sick in college.
I remembered her making soup when my father died.
I remembered her in Suite 1408 while our mother was dying.
All of it was true.
That was the terrible thing about people.
Love did not erase betrayal. Betrayal did not erase love.
Preston apparently believed the silence created an opportunity.
He stepped forward.
“You see?” he said to me. “Shelby was manipulated by your mother.”
Shelby slowly looked at him.
He continued.
“Evelyn spent years keeping her own daughter hidden. Shelby was hurt. I tried to help.”
I stared at him.
“You stole fourteen million dollars.”
“It wasn’t stolen.”
“You slept with my sister.”
His face tightened.
“You didn’t even know she was your sister.”
