Even Detective Hart looked stunned.
My knees failed.
James caught me.
I pushed him away.
I needed air.
I needed to wake up.
Adrian continued desperately.
“Your mother found Richard’s private records. She told me after I started asking questions about the accident.”
I stared at my mother.
“You knew?”
She looked at the floor.
Six months.
Adrian and I had been engaged for eight.
“You knew for six months,” I whispered.
Adrian was sobbing now.
“Yes.”
“And you stayed.”
“I was trying to prove whether it was true.”
“You stayed in my bed.”
“I was terrified.”
“You let me plan this wedding.”
“I didn’t know how to tell you.”
“You were going to MARRY ME!”
“No!”
His answer cracked through the room.
“I was never going to let the ceremony happen.”
I stared.
“What?”
He looked toward Vanessa.
“That envelope.”
Vanessa stiffened.
Adrian said, “I sent it to her.”
Silence.
Vanessa’s face emptied.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“That was you?”
“I knew you were investigating Margaret again. I knew you’d use it.”
Vanessa stared at the papers in her hands.
I understood slowly.
The unsigned package Vanessa had received six weeks earlier.
The documents that reopened the investigation.
The reason she suddenly returned to the wedding planning.
Adrian had sent them.
He had not been protecting himself.
He had been trying to destroy the wedding.
Without telling me why.
I laughed.
A horrible, shattered laugh.
“This is unbelievable.”
Adrian stepped forward despite the officer holding him.
“I couldn’t tell you what Margaret had told me because if it was false, I would destroy us for nothing. If it was true…”
His voice broke.
“I would destroy us anyway.”
I looked at Marianne.
“Is it true?”
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
My father had fathered Adrian during a relationship years before marrying my mother.
Adrian’s mother had never told Richard she was pregnant.
Richard learned only when Adrian joined the law firm handling Mercer business and a background investigation revealed the connection.
Instead of publicly acknowledging him, my father had quietly formed a relationship with him.
Mentored him.
Trusted him.
Used him to investigate my mother.
And then died before he could tell either daughter.
I felt grief reshape itself inside me.
My father had not been the uncomplicated man I remembered.
My mother was capable of things I had never imagined.
Adrian had entered my life through deception.
Vanessa had spent years carrying fragments of secrets she could not prove.
No one was innocent.
But some betrayals were unforgivable.
I looked at Adrian.
“You knew for six months.”
“Yes.”
“You should have told me the same day.”
“I know.”
“Not Vanessa. Not the police. Me.”
“I know.”
“You don’t get to decide which truth I can survive.”
His face crumpled.
“I know.”
And for the first time all evening, I believed him completely.
I removed the veil from my hair.
It slid to the floor.
“Then we’re done.”
He nodded.
No argument.
No declaration.
Just grief.
“Okay.”
My mother began laughing.
It was thin and strange.
“All this theater. And Richard still wins.”
I looked at her.
“Wins what?”
“Everything.”
Detective Hart said, “Mrs. Mercer—”
She ignored him.
“Your father manipulated all of you. Adrian. Vanessa. Marianne. Me.”
Her smile twisted.
“He made everyone believe they were special. Everyone believed Richard Mercer trusted them most.”
Vanessa stepped beside me.
“At least he didn’t kill anyone.”
