“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because it was horrible.”

“Seven years together and you never told me you had a husband?”

“We weren’t together seven years.”

“No. You and I have been together seven years.”

That realization hit him as he spoke.

The room seemed to contract around them.

Evelyn watched her brother calculate dates.

Simon died seven years earlier.

Nate met Olivia seven years earlier.

“How long after he died?” Nate whispered.

Olivia said nothing.

“How long?”

Evelyn answered.

“Eleven days.”

The silence afterward felt physical.

Nate stared at his bride.

Olivia’s mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Then Evelyn changed the screen again.

A financial record appeared.

Insurance.

Beneficiary: Olivia Vale.

Payout:

$2,400,000.

Someone near the back whispered, “Jesus.”

Olivia’s champagne flute slipped from her hand.

It struck the marble floor.

CRACK.

The sound echoed through the ballroom.

Olivia looked down at the shattered crystal.

Then slowly back at Evelyn.

“You had no right.”

Evelyn’s expression didn’t change.

“No right to what?”

“To investigate me.”

“I didn’t investigate you.”

Olivia laughed once.

It sounded almost hysterical.

“You have my marriage certificate. You have Simon’s death certificate. You have insurance documents.”

“I said I didn’t investigate you.”

“Then where did you get them?”

Evelyn paused.

“Someone sent them to me.”

That changed something in Olivia’s face.

Fear appeared.

Real fear.

Nate noticed.

“Who?”

Evelyn reached into her handbag.

She removed her phone.

Nate stepped toward her.

“What are you doing?”

“Something I should have done weeks ago.”

“Evelyn, stop.”

“Why?”

“Because this is my wedding.”

“No, Nate.”

Her voice broke for the first time.

“That’s exactly why I can’t stop.”

She looked around the ballroom.

“Three weeks ago, I received an anonymous envelope at my office.”

The screen changed.

A photograph of a brown envelope appeared.

Inside were photocopies.

Records.

A handwritten note.

Evelyn read it aloud.

“Ask what happened to Simon Vale before your brother becomes the next Simon Vale.”

Several guests gasped.

Nate’s face changed.

Olivia whispered, “That’s insane.”

Evelyn looked at her.

“I thought so too.”

She turned toward Nate.

“I almost threw everything away.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Because two days later, you told me something.”

Nate frowned.

“What?”

“You said Olivia had convinced you to increase your life insurance.”

Olivia’s eyes flashed.

“That was financial planning.”

Evelyn nodded.

“Eight million dollars.”

People began murmuring again.

Nate looked furious.

“That’s private.”

“It was.”

Evelyn swallowed.

“Until I discovered your beneficiary had been changed.”

Nate stared at her.

“What are you talking about?”

“Your original beneficiary was Mom.”

Margaret looked up sharply.

“After you and Olivia got engaged, you changed it.”

“To my wife.”

“Yes.”

“That’s normal.”

“It is.”

Evelyn turned toward the screen.

“This isn’t.”

A new document appeared.
