She still hoped her father had merely trusted the wrong people.

At eight forty-seven, her phone vibrated.

A message from Arthur Voss.

Claire had spent two months trying to persuade him to speak.

**Do not meet Edward alone. Ask him who ordered the chain.**

Attached was an audio file.

Before she could open it, another message arrived.

*He knows you have the records.*

Claire’s fingers went cold.

Across the room, Edward was speaking quietly with the hotel’s head of security.

Then Vanessa appeared beside her.

“We need to talk.”

“Call my lawyer.”

Vanessa seized her wrist beneath the tablecloth.

“Not tomorrow. Now.”

Claire pulled away.

“Take your hand off me.”

Edward looked over.

Vanessa saw him looking.

Something in her face changed.

She stood so abruptly that her chair struck the floor.

“You ungrateful little opportunist.”

The nearest tables fell silent.

Daniel rose.

“Mother, stop.”

Vanessa flung her champagne into Claire’s face.

Cold wine stung her eyes.

Then Vanessa grabbed the bodice of the silver gown.

And pulled.

Now the orchestra was frozen.

Now three hundred guests were watching.

Now Claire stood beneath the chandeliers with a hotel shawl covering the torn side of her wedding dress.

Daniel had been beside her a moment earlier, but a security officer had drawn him toward the corridor.

She could see them through the open doors.

Daniel was arguing.

The officer was touching his arm.

Claire reached into her clutch.

Her fingers closed around the small black flash drive.

Across the polished floor, Edward approached with two executives and another pair of guards.

His face was stern, controlled.

“What happened?”

Vanessa’s gloved fingers tightened around the strip of satin.

“It was an accident.”

Nobody in the room could possibly have believed her.

Claire looked directly at her.

**“Nothing about tonight was an accident.”**

A whisper traveled through the guests.

Edward stopped beside Claire.

“Sweetheart, come upstairs. We’ll sort this out privately.”

“No.”

He blinked.

It was such a small refusal.

She had never seen it land so heavily.

“You’re distressed.”

“I’m thinking clearly.”

“Your dress is torn. People are filming.”

“Yes,” Claire said. “They are.”

She glanced toward the audiovisual desk.

The technician, a young woman named Maya, had helped her prepare the wedding slideshow that afternoon.

“Maya. Please connect my laptop.”

Edward turned.

“There’s no need for that.”

“It’s already connected,” Maya replied uncertainly.

Claire walked toward the desk.

Vanessa caught her elbow.

“Claire… don’t.”

Claire held up the drive.

“Is this what you were looking for?”

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

“No.”

Behind them, Edward said, very quietly, “Take her upstairs.”

One guard moved.

A voice rang out from the doorway.

“Touch my wife and I’ll have you arrested.”
