Caroline began to cry.
“He controlled the voting rights while Maxwell was a minor,” she said. “Then Maxwell kept him on. Nobody questioned the old documents.”
“Why the wedding?” Maxwell asked.
Vanessa had appeared in the doorway.
Nobody had heard her approach.
Caroline looked at her daughter.
“The settlement put the shares into a new family holding company. Julian’s lawyers drafted it.”
Maxwell closed his eyes.
The papers waiting downstairs.
The ones he had been told were a routine protection for their future children.
A structure that would have made the missing money harder to trace and given Vanessa substantial influence over the family assets.
He looked at his wife.
“Did you ever love me?”
Vanessa’s face twisted.
“Would that change anything?”
It was an answer.
He took off the ring and set it on the piano.
Julian was arrested after the detective arrived.
The old crimes would require investigation. The documents would require authentication. There would be interviews, court orders, medical records, and years of accounts to examine.
But for once, Julian could not end the conversation by telling everyone to leave.
As an officer guided him toward the door, he stopped beside Elena.
“You understand what this means for him?”
Maxwell stood across the room, hollow-eyed.
Julian glanced toward him.
“The name. The inheritance. Everything he thinks he is.”
Elena looked at the man who had turned two children into entries he could rearrange.
Then she walked past him.
She stopped in front of Maxwell.
For a moment, she saw him as she always had: the distant master of the house, handsome and impatient, a man whose smallest request could shape her entire day.
Then she saw the boy behind the locked door.
The boy humming back to her through a storm.
“I don’t know what happens to the money,” she said.
He swallowed.
“I don’t care.”
“I might. I’ve been poor.”
A broken laugh escaped him.
She began crying again.
“But I know what happens to this.”
She took his hand.
“You’re still my brother.”
His face collapsed.
He bent his head against hers, and for the first time that night, he cried without trying to hide it.
Behind them, Julian was taken away.
Neither of his children watched him go.
Spring came slowly to Anderson House.
Investigators found enough in the company records to freeze Julian’s accounts. Dr. Pierce’s prescriptions drew a separate inquiry. Caroline cooperated, though cooperation did not erase what she had done.
Vanessa left before dawn after the wedding.
Her lawyers came later.
The legal questions surrounding the inheritance were complicated. Elena hired someone patient enough to explain them without treating her like an inconvenience.
