“You wore my wedding dress to humiliate me.”

“I know.”

“You created a fake recording to destroy my marriage.”

Her face twisted.

“I know.”

“And you don’t get to blame all of that on her.”

“I’m not.”

My mother suddenly laughed.

A strange, brittle sound.

“Oh, please.

Look at you both.”

Everyone turned toward her.

“You think Eleanor was some saint?”

“No,” I said.

My mother blinked.

“I think she made mistakes.

She admitted them.”

“That estate should have been mine.”

There it was.

Not grief.

Not regret.

The truth.

“I was her daughter,” my mother continued.

“I spent my entire life watching her prepare everything for the next generation.

You two inherited millions for doing nothing.”

Vanessa stared at her.

“So you stole it.”

“I used what should have belonged to me.”

“You stole from your daughters.”

“I BUILT YOU!”

My mother’s scream echoed beneath the chandeliers.

“I paid for your schools.

Your houses.

Your lives.”

Marcus spoke calmly.

“With money from their trust.”

Her face twisted.

Security had moved to the ballroom doors.

My attorney was already speaking quietly with two men near the rear.

My mother noticed.

“What is this?”

Marcus answered.

“The financial records have been referred to law enforcement.”

Her confidence disappeared.

“You called the police?”

“No,” I said.

She looked at me.

“The independent auditors did.”

Vanessa slowly sank into a chair.

My mother stared at both of us.

And then, unbelievably, she smiled.

“You think Claire is innocent?”

Adrian stiffened.

My mother pointed toward me.

“Ask her who sent the anonymous photograph.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“The photograph of Vanessa holding the dress.”

My heartbeat changed.

“How do you know about that?”

Vanessa looked up.

“What photograph?”

My mother laughed again.

“You really are easy.”

Marcus’s expression sharpened.

My mother continued.

“You thought Vanessa sent it?”

I stared at her.

“Who did?”

She smiled.

“Me.”

Vanessa stood.

“What?”

My mother lifted her chin.

“I needed Claire to discover the theft.”

Every sound disappeared.

Even Vanessa looked stunned.

“You told me to hide it,” she whispered.

“I needed you to believe that.”

My stomach turned.

Suddenly the entire plan became visible.

Not just one layer.

All of it.

My mother had encouraged Vanessa to steal my dress.

Then secretly warned me.

Because she wanted confrontation.

A screaming match.

A public disaster.

She expected me to accuse Vanessa.

Expected Vanessa to retaliate.

Expected Adrian to witness the ugliest possible version of our family.

Then, once everyone was emotional and furious, she would release the fabricated recording.

The wedding would collapse.

Vanessa would be blamed for stealing the gown.

I would be blamed for using Adrian.

And my mother?

She would become the devastated parent standing between two unstable daughters.

Marcus said it before I could.

“You intended to petition the court.”

My mother went still.

He stepped closer.

“If the wedding failed and both beneficiaries appeared incapable of managing the trust, you intended to request continuation of your trusteeship.”

Vanessa stared at her.

“You were going to destroy both of us.”

My mother said nothing.

That silence answered everything.

Vanessa began laughing.

Not because anything was funny.

Because sometimes the truth is so monstrous your body chooses the wrong reaction.

“All those years,” she whispered.

My mother looked at her.

“You needed me competitive.”
