Clara, who had never once raised her voice at either of his daughters.

But terror did not reason.

Terror chose the fastest explanation.

And Vanessa had given him one.

“What did you do?” Adrian whispered.

Clara shook her head.

“Nothing.”

“What did you do?”

“I saved her!”

“You expect me to believe Vanessa pushed my daughter?”

“Yes!”

The word struck something broken inside him.

Adrian moved before thought could stop him.

His hand crossed Clara’s face.

The slap echoed through the foyer.

Emma startled into silence.

Clara stumbled sideways.

Her palm rose slowly to her cheek.

Adrian’s own fingers began trembling the instant he realized what he had done.

Clara looked at him.

Not angry.

That would have been easier.

She looked shattered.

Tears filled her eyes.

“I was saving her…”

A voice came from the upper landing.

“Dad.”

Adrian turned.

Sixteen-year-old Olivia stood at the top of the stairs.

Her face was gray.

Her phone was clutched in both hands.

“Olivia, stay there.”

“No.”

“Sweetheart—”

“Stop.”

Her voice cracked.

Then hardened.

“Dad… stop. Watch this.”

Olivia came down the staircase slowly.

She didn’t look at Vanessa.

She didn’t look at Clara.

She walked directly to the enormous television mounted above the fireplace in the adjoining living room.

“Olivia,” Vanessa whispered. “Honey, you’re in shock.”

Olivia ignored her.

She connected her phone to the television.

Adrian shifted Emma higher against his chest.

“What are you doing?”

“I was recording.”

Vanessa stopped crying.

Just for a second.

But Adrian noticed.

Olivia opened a video.

“I’ve been making that stupid documentary for school, remember? ‘A Day Inside Your Family.’ Mrs. Harris wanted candid footage. I left my phone recording on the bookshelf because Emma kept laughing whenever Clara made faces at her.”

Clara wiped blood from her eyebrow.

“Olivia…”

“I saw everything.”

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

“No. You were upstairs.”

“I went upstairs.”

Olivia pressed play.

The television filled with a wide view of the foyer.

The recording had begun nearly forty minutes earlier.

Clara was folding baby blankets near the living room sofa.

Emma sat safely strapped inside her stroller.

Vanessa entered.

Even on the grainy video, Vanessa looked composed.

Beautiful.

Controlled.

The woman Adrian had begun dating five months after Evelyn’s death.

The woman everyone told him had brought color back into his life.

Vanessa spoke first.

“You need to stop interfering.”

Clara looked up.

“With what?”

“With Adrian.”

“I work for Adrian.”

“You know exactly what I mean.”

Clara lowered the blanket.

“I’m not interested in Adrian.”

Vanessa laughed.

“Please.”

“I’m interested in those girls being safe.”

Something in Vanessa’s face changed.

Adrian felt his stomach tighten.

On-screen, Vanessa stepped closer.

“You’re a nanny.”

“I know.”

“Then behave like one.”

Clara glanced toward Emma.

“I found another pill under Olivia’s bed.”

Olivia stiffened beside the television.

Adrian turned.

“What pill?”

“Keep watching,” Olivia said.

On-screen, Vanessa’s voice became quieter.

“You had no right to search her room.”

“I wasn’t searching. I was putting laundry away.”

“You don’t know what you found.”

“I photographed it.”

Vanessa looked suddenly furious.

Clara continued.

“Olivia says she hasn’t been taking anything.”

Adrian stared at Vanessa.

Vanessa whispered, “This isn’t what it looks like.”

The video continued.

Clara moved beside Emma’s stroller.

“I’m telling Adrian tonight.”
