My stomach dropped.

“No.”

“I thought the same thing.”

“Stop.”

“She came to me with documents.”

“Stop.”

“She told me Daniel had stolen it.”

Daniel shouted, “That’s insane!”

Vanessa continued.

“I believed her.”

Sophie had convinced Vanessa that Daniel was embezzling from his own family company.

Vanessa, obsessed with preserving the Ashford name, had secretly moved funds between accounts to hide the losses until she could confront Daniel privately.

That explained the emails.

Keep Daniel clean.

Not because Vanessa was protecting herself.

Because she believed she was protecting him.

Dad shook his head.

“Then why involve Marcus?”

“He discovered the discrepancy before I did.”

“And the Whitmore funds?”

Vanessa’s face hardened with shame.

“I was going to borrow enough from the project account to keep auditors from discovering the deficit.”

“Borrow?”

Dad’s voice was ice.

“You were going to misuse charitable funds.”

“Yes.”

The admission shocked everyone.

Vanessa didn’t defend herself.

“I panicked.”

She looked at me.

“I deserve whatever happens because of that.”

Then she pointed toward the screen.

“

But Sophie created the deficit.

”

Daniel shouted, “You’re lying!”

“Check the beneficiary companies.”

Dad looked toward security.

“Do it.”

A hotel executive opened one of the recovered files.

Shell companies appeared.

Halcyon Consulting.

Merritt International.

Northstar Ventures.

Then another.

Evelyn Holdings.

My mother’s name.

I stopped breathing.

Dad whispered:

“No.”

The executive opened the registration records.

Owner:

Claire Whitmore.

Every eye in the room turned toward me.

I felt the floor disappear.

“I’ve never seen that company.”

Dad looked at me.

“I know.”

Daniel didn’t.

“You own it?”

“No!”

“Your name is right there!”

“It’s fake!”

Vanessa watched me carefully.

“That’s what Sophie wanted everyone to believe.”

I stared at her.

“What?”

“She wasn’t stealing only from Daniel’s family.”

My father closed his eyes.

Vanessa continued.

“She was building a trail.”

“To me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

My phone rang.

Everyone jumped.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Sophie?”

Silence.

Then her voice.

“Hi, Claire.”

My knees nearly gave out.

“Where are you?”

“Somewhere quiet.”

“What have you done?”

She laughed softly.

“You always ask the wrong question.”

“Come back.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because tonight was supposed to end differently.”

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Put her on speaker.”

I did.

Sophie sighed.

“Hello, Vanessa.”

“You set me up.”

“Yes.”

“You stole the money.”

“Yes.”

Daniel made a strangled sound.

Sophie heard him.

“Daniel’s there?”

“Sophie,” he whispered.

For the first time, her voice changed.

Something softer entered it.

“I’m sorry.”

“Sorry?”

He began crying.

“You married me three hours ago.”

“I know.”

“Was any of it real?”

Silence.

Then:

“More than I wanted it to be.”

He sat down.

I gripped the phone.

“Why frame me?”

Sophie didn’t answer.

“Sophie.”

“Ask Dad.”

Dad stiffened.

I looked at him.

“Ask him what?”

Another silence.

Then Sophie said:

“Ask him why Mom died.”

My father’s face changed.

Not grief.

Not confusion.

Fear.

I saw it.

So did Vanessa.

“Dad?”

He looked at me.

“Claire—”

Sophie laughed through the phone.

“There it is.”

My skin went cold.

“Tell me.”

Dad shook his head.

“Not here.”
