I had added another.
On one side, Claire—Clara—held me as a newborn.
On the other, Elena held Leo.
Two sisters.
Two babies.
Two generations separated by a secret one cruel man believed he could bury forever.
Luca sat beside us.
“I’ve wondered about something.”
“That sounds dangerous.”
“When Leo saw you at Aurelia…”
I looked down at the child.
“Yes?”
“He didn’t just recognize Elena’s face.”
“What do you mean?”
Luca removed his phone.
He opened an old video.
Elena sat on the floor of Leo’s nursery.
The baby was perhaps three months old.
She held a printed photograph.
My employee photo from Aurelia’s website.
I stared.
In the video, Elena smiled at Leo and pointed toward my face.
“This is Aunt Avery,” she whispered.
My chest tightened.
“She knew?”
Luca nodded.
“Apparently she had found you before she died.”
The video continued.
Elena touched the photograph.
“She doesn’t know us yet.”
My eyes filled.
“She will someday.”
Leo babbled.
Elena laughed.
Then she said the words that broke me.
“If anything ever happens to Mommy, you find her. You hear me, little lion? You find Aunt Avery.”
The video ended.
I couldn’t move.
Luca looked at me.
“That was why he reached for you.”
I stared at Leo.
All this time I had believed coincidence, resemblance, instinct or blood had pulled his arms toward me across Table Twelve.
But it had been simpler.
And more extraordinary.
His mother had taught him my face.
Before she died, Elena had made sure her son knew exactly where to look.
I picked him up.
Leo rested his forehead against mine.
And suddenly I remembered the first night.
His hands opening.
His desperate crying.
The way his entire body relaxed when I touched him.
He hadn’t mistaken me for his mother.
He hadn’t been reaching for a stranger.
He had been keeping a promise.
Luca looked toward the window where Philadelphia glowed beyond the glass.
“Do you ever think about what would have happened if Greg had assigned another server that night?”
I smiled through tears.
“No.”
“Why not?”
I kissed Leo’s hair.
“Because he didn’t.”
For years, powerful men had tried to control my life without my knowledge.
Salvatore had tried to erase me.
My adoptive parents had tried to hide me.
Greg had tried to protect me.
Clara had tried to stay away from me.
Luca had tried to shield me.
Elena had tried to find me.
But in the end, none of them brought the truth to my table.
A ten-month-old baby did.
A baby who had been shown a photograph.
A baby who remembered a face.
A baby who reached across a crowded restaurant and refused to stop reaching until the adults finally understood.
Leo Moretti had not recognized me because blood called to blood.
He recognized me because his mother had loved a sister she never got the chance to meet—and before she died, she made certain her son would.
I closed the pendant.
Leo wrapped both arms around my neck.
And this time, when he reached for me, I knew exactly why.
