For the first time since he had entered the hallway, Isabella cried.
Not elegantly.
Not quietly.
She sobbed into his chest until Elena stirred.
Then Isabella immediately turned toward the crib.
The instinctive movement said more than any legal document ever could.
Vincent watched his wife reach for their daughter.
And something inside him became terrifyingly calm.
Someone had tried to convince Isabella Moretti that motherhood itself had happened without her consent.
Vincent intended to learn who.
The hospital investigation began the next morning.
Assistant State’s Attorney Leah Chen personally took the case after watching the footage.
She was small, sharply dressed, and carried herself with the energy of someone permanently irritated by lies.
She placed two documents on Vincent’s dining table.
One was the discharge record copied from St. Catherine’s electronic system.
The other was a physical page recovered from the Moretti home.
Both had Isabella’s name.
Both were dated March 14.
But they were different.
The hospital version stated:
Infant Elena Moretti discharged to mother and father.
The second stated:
Mother voluntarily transfers temporary custodial authority to Evelyn Hart pending medical recovery.
Beneath it appeared Isabella’s signature.
Chen slid another page beside it.
Isabella’s genuine consent form from the delivery.
“Look at the I.”
Vincent did.
On Isabella’s real signature, the capital I curved left before dropping.
On the supposed surrender, it curved right.
Chen leaned back.
“Your wife didn’t sign this.”
Isabella closed her eyes.
Vincent asked, “Who replaced the page?”
“We’re finding out.”
“What about the other baby?”
“That is more complicated.”
“How complicated?”
Chen looked at him.
“We traced the woman in the video.”
Isabella straightened.
“Who is she?”
“Her name is Nora Vale. Former maternity nurse. She operates a private postpartum service.”
Vincent frowned.
“And the child?”
Chen hesitated.
“The child was her granddaughter.”
Isabella stared.
“What?”
“Nora’s daughter had given birth five days earlier. According to Nora, Evelyn paid her fifteen thousand dollars to bring the baby to this house for three hours.”
“For what purpose?”
“She says she was told it was for a security simulation.”
Vincent laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
“A security simulation involving an actual newborn?”
“Nora says she knew that explanation was ridiculous.”
“Then why did she do it?”
“Fifteen thousand dollars.”
Isabella whispered, “My mother rented someone else’s baby.”
Chen’s eyes hardened.
“Yes.”
“But why?”
“That’s what we’re trying to understand.”
Vincent already understood part of it.
“Digital evidence.”
Chen looked at him.
He stood.
“The nursery monitor tracks movement. Temperature. Feeding times. The smart bassinet records when a child is placed inside.”
Isabella slowly turned toward him.
Vincent continued.
“If Evelyn needed to prove she took control of Elena before Elena actually came home…”
“She needed electronic records showing an infant was present,” Chen finished.
Nine forty-two.
The exact time on the fabricated surrender document.
Isabella went pale.
Chen opened another folder.
“There’s more.”
Of course there was.
There was always more.
“The person who drafted the surrender form used a template belonging to Hart Family Holdings.”
Isabella frowned.
“My father’s company?”
