Adrien’s expression changed completely.

“Elena.”

“What?”

“Where are those photographs?”

“At my studio.”

“How many books did Daniel bring you?”

She thought.

“Maybe fifteen.”

Adrien picked up his phone.

“We leave now.”

“Why?”

“Because if those strips contain what I think they contain, your husband didn’t use your studio only to launder money.”

He looked at the old book.

“He used you to transport the records of the people behind it.”

Chapter Four: What Was Hidden in the Books

Elena’s restoration studio occupied the second floor of an old print shop downtown.

At 1:17 a.m., she unlocked the door.

The familiar smell of paper, leather, wheat paste, and linen usually calmed her.

Tonight it felt like entering a crime scene.

She switched on the lights.

Worktables appeared beneath long brass lamps.

Books waited inside humidity-controlled cabinets.

A nineteenth-century Bible rested beneath weights.

A damaged atlas lay open beside Japanese repair tissue.

Adrien paused.

“This is your business?”

“My life, mostly.”

Daniel had once called it her expensive hobby.

Adrien ran one finger along the edge of a worktable.

“You built all this?”

“Yes.”

“Alone?”

“Mostly.”

Something unreadable passed across his face.

Elena went to her computer.

Her restoration archive contained tens of thousands of photographs.

She searched Daniel’s name.

Fifteen projects appeared.

She opened the first.

A medieval prayer book.

Before-and-after images.

Binding.

Spine.

Stitching.

Then—

“There.”

A strip of thin paper hidden beneath the backing.

Rows of numbers.

Adrien leaned closer.

His face changed.

“You recognize it.”

He didn’t answer.

Elena opened another.

More numbers.

Another.

Initials.

M.R.

D.C.

V.H.

A.V.

Payments.

Dates.

Company abbreviations.

She whispered, “What is this?”

Adrien pulled out his phone.

“Marcus needs to see it.”

Elena caught his wrist.

“Wait.”

He looked down at her hand.

She released him.

“Why?”

She enlarged one image.

A line read:

M.R. — 2.5 / HALCYON / EXIT FUND

Another:

M.R. AUTHORIZED REASSIGNMENT — E.C.

Adrien’s expression hardened.

“What does M.R. mean?”

Elena asked the question even though she already knew.

Adrien didn’t answer.

She whispered, “Marcus Reed.”

The room fell silent.

Adrien stared at the screen.

“No.”

“Those are his initials.”

“There are thousands of people with those initials.”

“How many of them control your finances?”

Adrien stepped back.

“You don’t know what you’re looking at.”

“Neither do you.”

“He’s been with me seventeen years.”

Elena turned toward him.

“And Daniel slept beside me for eight.”

That stopped him.

She pointed at the screen.

“Trust is not evidence.”

Adrien stared at the numbers.

For the first time since she had met him, the most feared man in the city looked uncertain.

Then the elevator bell rang.

Both of them turned.

Adrien reached beneath his jacket.

The doors opened.

Marcus stepped out.

Alone.

“Boss.”

Adrien relaxed slightly.

Marcus looked at Elena.

Then the computer screen.

And smiled.

Not warmly.

Not with surprise.

With relief.

“There it is.”

Adrien’s hand froze beneath his jacket.

Marcus drew his gun first.

“Hands where I can see them.”

Elena’s heart stopped.

Adrien stared at the man who had stood beside him for seventeen years.

“Marcus.”

“Don’t.”

Marcus aimed at his chest.

“I know how fast you are.”

Adrien slowly raised his hands.

Elena whispered, “It was you.”

Marcus smiled.

“No, Mrs. Carter.”

He looked around her studio.

“It was all of you.”

Chapter Five: The Man Behind the Monster

Marcus had built the theft over six years.

Daniel was only one piece.

A useful accountant.

Ambitious.

Greedy.

Easy to control.

Vanessa managed corporate filings.

Other people opened companies, moved contracts, falsified invoices.

But Marcus had designed the structure.

Adrien listened without moving.

“You stole from me.”

Marcus laughed.

“That’s your problem. You still think it was your money.”

Adrien’s expression darkened.

Marcus nodded toward Elena’s computer.
