Rick traveled in handcuffs behind Deputy Vasquez.
There was enough evidence now for assault charges.
But nobody yet understood what was on the recording.
Gabriel Stone stood outside his garage when the convoy arrived.
Ninety-seven motorcycles filled the highway behind Elena.
Gabriel looked at Mace.
Mace looked at Gabriel.
Neither man spoke.
Then Elena climbed from the truck.
She held up the photograph.
Her voice broke.
“You’re my uncle.”
Gabriel closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
“How long have you known?”
“Since before you were born.”
“And you let me live with him?”
The accusation hit him visibly.
Gabriel lowered his head.
“I tried to get you out.”
“When?”
“When you were eleven. Fourteen. Seventeen.”
Elena stared.
“He told me you were some weird mechanic who felt sorry for Mom.”
Gabriel laughed bitterly.
“Rick obtained restraining orders. Claimed I threatened your mother. Your mother supported him.”
“My mother?”
Gabriel looked toward Rick.
“Because he owned her.”
Rick said nothing.
Gabriel’s voice became harder.
“After Caleb died, Rick showed Marisol photographs of your father meeting with men connected to illegal gambling operations. He told her Caleb had been laundering money and threatened to make sure you grew up believing your father was a criminal.”
Mace frowned.
“That wouldn’t have been enough.”
“No.”
Gabriel looked at Elena.
“He also told her he could prove I murdered Caleb.”
Silence settled across the yard.
Elena stopped breathing.
“Did you?”
Gabriel’s face collapsed.
“No.”
Rick began laughing from beside the cruiser.
“No, Gabriel. Tell them the whole thing.”
Gabriel turned.
Rick’s smile vanished.
“Go on.”
Gabriel walked toward him.
“You spent nineteen years thinking I never found out.”
Rick stared.
Gabriel pointed at the cassette.
“I found out twelve years ago.”
Rick’s face emptied.
“What?”
“That’s why I hid the motorcycle.”
Gabriel looked at Elena.
“The tape isn’t Caleb’s.”
Elena stared at him.
“Then whose is it?”
Gabriel swallowed.
“Your mother’s.”
They played it inside the garage.
Static crackled.
Then Marisol’s voice filled the room.
Elena recognized it instantly.
Older than in her memories.
Frightened.
But unmistakable.
“If you’re hearing this, Elena, then Gabriel finally decided you were strong enough to know.”
Elena’s knees weakened.
Gabriel brought a chair.
She refused it.
The recording continued.

“I told you your father died in an accident. That was a lie.”
Rick stopped moving.
“I told you Rick saved us afterward. That was also a lie.”
Marisol inhaled shakily.
“Your father discovered Rick stealing from the machine shop. Caleb planned to expose him. Rick begged me to convince Caleb to wait one night.”
Elena looked at Rick.
Marisol continued.
“I did.”
Her voice broke.
“That mistake killed him.”
On the night Caleb died, Rick had cut the brake line on Caleb’s truck.
But Caleb had discovered the sabotage before leaving.
He confronted Rick.
A fight followed.
Rick ran.
Caleb then took his Harley to the sheriff’s station with financial evidence hidden inside the motorcycle.
He never arrived.
Because someone else was waiting on Raven Pass.
Elena whispered:
“Who?”
The recording answered.
