“Me.”

Nobody moved.

Marisol was crying on the tape.

“I stood in the road and stopped him.”

Elena’s hands began trembling.

“I begged him not to go to police.”

Mace shut his eyes.

Marisol explained that Rick owed money to violent bookmakers.

If Caleb exposed the theft, the bookmakers had threatened to kill not only Rick—but Marisol and her unborn child, because Rick had falsely told them Marisol had helped hide the money.

Caleb refused to be intimidated.

He told Marisol they would go to police together.

Then headlights appeared.

Rick.

He had followed them.

A confrontation erupted.

Rick attacked Caleb with a tire iron.

Caleb fought back.

Marisol tried to stop them.

Then Caleb fell over the edge of the ravine.

Rick claimed it had been an accident.

Instead of calling police, Rick panicked.

He placed Caleb’s body inside the truck.

Then rolled it down the ravine and set it on fire.

Elena felt sick.

But the recording was not finished.

“Gabriel,” Marisol whispered on the tape, “if you hear this… forgive me.”

Gabriel began crying silently.

“I helped Rick lie.”

Elena stared at the recorder.

Her mother had told investigators Caleb was distraught.

That he had been drinking.

She gave Rick an alibi.

Why?

Because Rick convinced her that if he went to prison, the bookmakers would come after Elena.

Fear became captivity.

Years passed.

Rick slowly inserted himself into Marisol’s life.

Controlled her money.

Controlled where she went.

Then married her.

By the time Marisol understood that the threats had been exaggerated, she was trapped.

“I stayed because I was afraid.”

Her recorded voice trembled.

“And then I realized Elena was learning fear from me.”

Elena began sobbing.

The final portion had been recorded shortly before Marisol’s death.

“I’m leaving Rick tomorrow.”

Elena looked sharply at Gabriel.

Gabriel went pale.

On the tape, Marisol said:

“I found Caleb’s motorcycle. Rick hid it inside an old storage building because he believed the accounting ledger was still inside.”

The key marked 214 opened that storage unit.

“But Rick was wrong.”

Marisol’s voice steadied.

“Caleb hid something far more dangerous.”

A long pause.

“His original financial records are in a safe-deposit box under Elena’s name.”

Mace looked at the key.

Marisol continued.

“The motorcycle contains the document proving the account belongs to her.”

Elena stared at the bike outside.

“But that isn’t why Rick is afraid of it.”

Rick suddenly began struggling against the deputy.

“Turn it off.”

Vasquez tightened the cuffs.

Marisol’s final words silenced everyone.

“The motorcycle also contains one fingerprint Rick believed burned with Caleb’s truck.”

Elena frowned.

Mace looked toward the removed steel panel.

Inside the tube had been one more item nobody had recognized.

A small plastic sleeve containing a broken silver cuff link.

Gabriel picked it up.

Marisol’s voice continued.

“Rick lost it while fighting Caleb.”

Rick’s face turned gray.

“Caleb grabbed his wrist before he fell. The cuff link tore away. I picked it up. Rick searched for it for years.”

Gabriel whispered:

“Oh my God.”
