“No.”
I looked around the ballroom.
At the flowers.
The guests.
The frozen surveillance image.
The ruined crystal skirt on the floor.
“You ended it.”
I removed my engagement ring.
His eyes followed it.
Then something strange happened.
Victoria rushed toward me.
Not angrily.
Desperately.
“Emma, wait.”
Claire stepped between us.
Victoria stopped.
“You cannot leave.”
I almost smiled.
“Watch me.”
“No, you don’t understand.”
She looked toward the ballroom doors.
Two men had just entered.
Dark suits.
Badges clipped at their waists.
Behind them came a woman carrying a leather portfolio.
The room erupted.
Adrian went completely still.
I recognized the woman.
Investigator Lena Ortiz from the city’s Department of Buildings.
She had been handling my report.
She approached the altar.
“Emma.”
“You received it?”
She nodded.
“This afternoon.”
Adrian stared at me.
“Received what?”
That was when the final piece fell into place.
And for the first time all day, I understood something Victoria didn’t.
She thought the security footage had been my trap.
It wasn’t.
Not really.
The dress wasn’t even the trap.
The wedding was.
Three days earlier, Margaret Vale had contacted me anonymously.
She didn’t reveal her identity.
She merely said evidence existed connecting Harrington executives to the fraudulent condemnation report.
I told Investigator Ortiz.
She asked me to continue behaving normally while they traced the source.
That morning, Margaret finally agreed to cooperate.
The wedding gathered every major Harrington executive in one place.
Phones.
Laptops.
Corporate vehicles.
People who had spent years coordinating from separate offices were suddenly under one roof.
Investigators had begun serving warrants while we stood at the altar.
Ortiz faced Adrian.
“Adrian Harrington, we have a warrant for your arrest on suspicion of conspiracy to commit fraud, obstruction of a municipal investigation, destruction of protected property, and related offenses.”
Nobody moved.
Adrian looked at me.
“You knew they were coming?”
“Not until Claire handed me the documents.”
That was true.
I had known investigators were moving quickly.
I had not known they would arrest him at our wedding.
His face crumpled.
For the first time, I saw the frightened man beneath the Harrington name.
“Emma…”
I wanted to go to him.
God help me, part of me wanted to.
Instead I held my ground.
Ortiz turned toward Victoria.
“And Victoria Harrington, we have a warrant for your arrest regarding obstruction of justice, witness intimidation, burglary conspiracy, and evidence tampering.”
Victoria actually laughed.
“You cannot be serious.”
Then Margaret spoke from behind her.
“They are.”
Victoria looked at the woman who had served her for twenty-three years.
“Why?”
Margaret’s answer was quiet.
“Because my husband worked in one of those buildings.”
Victoria frowned.
“He was the night superintendent.”
Realization spread slowly across Margaret’s face.
“He was inside when your contractor damaged the support column.”
My skin went cold.
“I thought no one was there,” Adrian whispered.
Margaret looked at him.
“There was.”
The room became silent.
“What happened to him?” Claire asked.
