Perfect white dress.

Diamond earrings.

Face wet with silent tears.

And suddenly, she looked nothing like a confused bride whose wedding had spiraled beyond control.

She looked calm.

Prepared.

Vanessa whispered, “Sophie?”

My sister drew a slow breath.

Then she looked at me.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For not telling you.”

Daniel stared at his wife.

“You knew?”

Sophie nodded.

“More than you thought.”

She walked toward the stage.

The three-hundred-person ballroom parted for her.

“When Daniel started behaving strangely eight months ago, I thought he was having an affair.”

A few startled laughs escaped.

Even Sophie smiled faintly.

“So I did something I’m not proud of. I checked his desk.”

Daniel rubbed his face.

“I found the Vesper documents.”

She looked toward him.

“I also found the recording of Vanessa.”

“You heard it?”

“Every word.”

“Why didn’t you say anything?”

“Because you were lying to protect me.”

Her eyes shifted toward Vanessa.

“And Vanessa was using that protection to control you.”

Sophie had contacted an attorney.

Then an investigator.

Then an independent forensic accountant.

Not me.

“I didn’t tell Claire because Claire would have confronted Dad immediately.”

She was right.

“I didn’t tell Dad because his authorization codes were involved.”

Also right.

“And I didn’t tell Daniel because I needed to know whether he was protecting me or protecting Vanessa.”

Daniel bowed his head.

Sophie turned to Vanessa.

“The wedding created the only day when you would be inside the Grand Aurelia long enough to access whatever you had hidden here.”

Vanessa’s face slowly emptied.

My breath caught.

“You knew she’d go upstairs?” I asked.

“I suspected.”

Sophie looked at Adrian.

“Security was watching the executive floor from noon onward.”

Adrian nodded.

I stared at him.

“You told me the breach had just been discovered.”

“It had.”

“You left out the part where Sophie asked you to watch for it.”

“Yes.”

I almost laughed.

Instead I looked at my little sister in absolute disbelief.

Vanessa recovered first.

“You used your own wedding as a trap?”

“No.”

Sophie shook her head.

“I used your arrogance as one.”

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

Then, incredibly, she laughed.

Softly.

Slowly.

Almost sympathetically.

“Oh, Sophie.”

Something about the sound made my skin crawl.

Vanessa looked toward the investigators.

“You all think you understand this.”

Nobody answered.

“You think I stole four million dollars.”

The lead investigator said, “Didn’t you?”

“No.”

She smiled.

“I stole nothing.”

Dad snapped, “The records say otherwise.”

“The records say Vesper received money.”

“Through your dead sister-in-law’s identity!”

Vanessa looked at him.

“Correct.”

The investigator stepped closer.

“Then perhaps you’d like to explain.”

Vanessa’s eyes moved through the room.

Finally, they settled on me.

“Ask Claire to open the beneficiary records.”

I looked at the laptop.

The Vesper banking folder contained dozens of files.

I opened the beneficiary report.

At first I didn’t understand what I was seeing.

The account had received nearly five million dollars.

But most of it was still there.

Transfers had been made out.

Not to Vanessa.

Not to Daniel.

Not to some yacht company or foreign account.

The money had been sent to eleven different charitable trusts.

Children’s hospitals.

Scholarship funds.

A domestic violence shelter.

A cancer research center.

A housing program.

I stared at the screen.

Vanessa said quietly, “You see?”

Confusion spread through the room.

Dad looked stunned.

“If you didn’t take it, why hide it?”

“Because the money was never supposed to be discovered.”
